Omar Gandhi House: An Analysis

Located on the second floor of the OG house, the marble-covered wood-burning fireplace provides warmth, primarily for the seated occupant directly in front. However, due to the inefficiency of wood-burning fireplaces, and its placement being adjacent to the full-length skylight, where heat will dissipate upward, the thermal efficiency of this fireplace was not the priority for Omar Gandhi. However, the thermal detail Omar Gandhi was more interested in was the cedar cladding on the exterior of the building, and the many white oak panels which make up the interior of the house. As wood is a natural insulator, it shields the occupant from the bitter cold winters of Nova Scotia.
